Sam Raimi to direct remake of Magic for Lionsgate
Sam Raimi will direct a new Lionsgate adaptation of William Goldman’s ventriloquist thriller Magic, the story that inspired the 1978 film starring Anthony Hopkins. Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, writers of Freddy vs. Jason and collaborators on Send Help, penned the screenplay for this remake. Raimi, creator of Evil Dead and director of the Spider-Man trilogies, is known for kinetic camera work and comic horror, which fits a plot about a magician and his sinister dummy Fats. The project matters because it revives a landmark William Goldman property for mainstream horror and pairs a high-profile director with a psychological puppet premise that plays to Raimi’s strengths.
Sam Raimi is DIRECTING a new take on the 1970s cult classic horror movie MAGIC. Mark Swift & Damian Shannon (Freddy vs. Jason, Send Help) wrote the script. The original starred Anthony Hopkins as a magician who reaches fame alongside his twisted ventriloquist dummy named Fats.
"Sam Raimi is Directing-" Nope. Stop right There. I'M IN.
Magic is a really good movie.
Why? Goldman not good enough, ffs?
Awesome book, too. William Goldman also wrote "Marathon Man" and "Control"..I'm really surprised "Control" hasn't been made into a movie.
Does Sam Raimi look a little bit like a ventriloquist doll nowadays? Yes he does. But that is not said to be mean that is said to indicate the movie will be even better because he can understand them inside and out.
There's no better fit for Sam Raimi than a horror movie about an evil ventriloquist dummy. It's like the premise is tailor made around every single one of his strengths and weakness.
All I want is a copy of Sam's unpublished script based on The Avengers TV series, in which he supposedly wrote a part for Diana Rigg (who was then around 45-50) as an evil version of Barbara Wodehouse, the dog training legend. If it actually doesn’t exist, I don’t want to know.
