Dormition Cathedral at Kyiv Pechersk Lavra set on fire

newsJun 15, 2026614,849

Russian strikes overnight hit the Dormition (Assumption) Cathedral at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, igniting a blaze that has consumed the cathedral roof and parts of the monastery. The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, founded in 1051 and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of Eastern Orthodoxy’s most sacred complexes, and staff say relics and museum exhibits were evacuated. Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko and emergency services reported that residential buildings across the capital were also struck and at least six people were injured as authorities assess the damage. The attack damages a centuries-old, UNESCO-protected site and raises urgent concerns about cultural heritage loss and legal protections for historic monuments.

It houses Ukraine’s oldest historical records. Nestor the Chronicler, famous Lavra monk, wrote Primary Chronicle here in the early 12th century, which is the foundational historical text for history of Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia

Olga Nesterova282

Here I want to note that during WWII, Nazi Germans didn’t attack the cathedral, but Soviets mined it later lying that these were the Germans.

Olga Nesterova210

The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra was founded in 1051 AD during the golden age of Kyivan Rus'. It is historically important because it served as the cradle of East Slavic Orthodoxy, a center for early literacy and chronicle-writing, and a premier medical and cultural hub for Eastern Europe.

Olga Nesterova153

This is our heritage. It is burning.

Following the Christianization of Kyivan Rus' in 988 AD, the Lavra quickly grew into the most influential monastery in Eastern Europe, shaping the religious and political landscape of the entire region.

What a shame. Such a beautiful Cathedral. And apparently not the first time Russia has blown it up. 😡 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dormiti...

What a horrible atrocity for the people of Ukraine and for the world.

Putin needs to die. By any means necessary.

This is the war-monger, Vladimir Putin, destroying a non-military site. You know who supports Putin? Trump, Vance, & the Republican Party!! We stand with Ukraine against the Russian invaders. 🇺🇸🇺🇦🇺🇸 Soon, the USA will revert to supporting freedom loving people around the world! Voting counts! 🇺🇸🗳️🇺🇸

Beng27

This will have no military benefit to Russia and will just make Ukraine more determined to fight harder.

Laurie Jan 🎹20

These barbarous fuckers. The day the Ukrainians achieve victory, there must be an immediate effort to hold Russia accountable for the war crimes they have committed.

SimonB5218

The Russian mafia terrorist state is a spiteful insecure bitter neighbour and Ukraine deserves to live in peace Slava Ukraine

So tragically sad. Invisible to Americans, but Putin’s war nags on, month after month.

Russia is a terrorist state

I thought Putin considered the Kyiv Cathedrals as part of untouchable and sacrosanct- that is what I was told by a classmate of mine who got his PhD in Ukraine - was part of Soviet Russia - married a Ukrainian Engineer - and settled in Moscow - his spouse is estranged with her cousins who live on

tubbyturbo.bsky.social7

Russian terrorist MF’ers!!! Losing the war they started, they resort to targeting homes, human safari, committing environmental disasters and every other war crime imaginable. Now destroying irreplaceable historic sites, that belong to the civilized world A word they don’t understand, damn orcs

WillyWonkasTherapist7

I hope Ukraine responds in kind. That's the only response Russia understands.

sunbirdie.bsky.social7

I am so sorry - feels the same as when Notre Dame was on fire. Why are people so intent on destruction? 🥺

One of many Russian crimes

Why. Just why. My heart breaks again.

Keeping receipts is excellent. Make sure to add that besides invading a sovereign country and trying to kill civilians, they are actively targeting centers of culture and art.

keechiep.bsky.social3

HeartbreakIng that this is happening in Ukraine...and Lebanon and Gaza and West Bank. The monsters not only want to kill people, but their histories and achievements as well.

shogsotg.bsky.social3

russia is a genocidal state and always has been. Fuck russia! Slava Ukraine!!!!

nadinettr.bsky.social3

What a shame, this is heartbreaking

For Freedom's Sake3

For anyone keeping score at home; this is also a war crime. (Article 8 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court)

I’m so sorry, Olga. I remember when Notre Dame caught fire, I cried at the images. I’m so very sorry.

Project Martha3

@onestpress.onestnetwork.com This is devastating to see. The loss of cultural heritage is a wound that goes beyond the immediate tragedy. Sending strength to those who care for this place and its history.

BuckeyeCub3

So horrible. My heart aches for Ukrainians.

Joe Hickman3

I toured the Lavra when I visited Kiev in 2007. Such a supreme disgrace to destroy this history.

katherinemary.bsky.social3

So, trump is planning to give Iran (which HE invaded) billion$ of dollars to rebuild, but nothing for Ukraine (that putin invaded!😡), and no help at all to STOP the horrors that Ukrainians suffer every damned day?!? F*ck it all. I have no faith in global humanity, any more. 😞😢 I’m so pissed off.😡

Dr Randi Fass2

That’s too sad. It last burned early in the 18th century.

Syberarky2

Effn Russian barbarians. Utterly disgraceful.

SteveG2

Fuck Putin. Fuck Trump. Evil.

justme113.bsky.social2

I’m so very sorry. This is horrific

reasonmatters.bsky.social2

That fire is incinerating any last doubt in the world that the Russian Orthodox Church is a corrupt, venal and servile instrument of the state. To support the Putin regime, and this war, it will tolerate even this. Talk about a crime against humanity.

woodydelano.bsky.social2

Russia shouldn’t be allowed to have a military. I hope Ukraine wipes them out

Cielo Azul NM2

This is Putin's Russia hitting the soul of Kyiv, literally. Putin does it to demoralize the Ukranian people. There is a special place in hell for monsters like Putin.

Victor Y Pyrrhic2

At least European countries are finally acting...

I Got Sunshine In A Bag2

I imagine most Americans and Russians don’t care unless they are inconvenienced. Know that there are Americans that do care, and I bet there are Russians that do as well. 🇺🇦

Eric Gélinas2

They are pay dearly. More strikes on oil. It’s a low and poor escalation from Putin. Hurts. UNESCO let’s see if they have some punch or toothless like the UN. All Russian monuments should loose their mention of World Heritage. Disgraceful.

Warren Kay2

The Orcs are even more willfully destructive than Isis. Call me naive, but I believe Ukrainians would not stoop to that psychological depravity. One day the last Russian will leave, not before the families of nearly 1.5 million soldiers raise their voices against this war
