Ex‑defence minister Al Carns decries 'unbelievable' MoD waste

Al Carns, who resigned as defence minister last week, told The Guardian the Ministry of Defence is riddled with "unbelievable" waste and inefficiency. Carns said the department is hamstrung by sunk costs and an unwillingness to reform legacy programmes, and that every time he turned over a stone he encountered another shock. He warned that continuing to pour money into failing long-running projects prevents funding for higher-priority capabilities and said that inability to confront those costs prompted his departure. That criticism matters because it puts pressure on defence budgeting choices and on ministers to enact structural reforms to protect military readiness and taxpayer value.
