Mississippi officer shoots and kills 1-year-old Kohen Wiley after Walmart shoplifting call
A Senatobia police officer fired at a vehicle after a Walmart shoplifting call, killing 1-year-old Kohen Wiley and seriously injuring one adult. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said the three people had gotten into the vehicle after exiting the store and officers opened fire when the driver drove toward them. Kohen Wiley's grandfather confirmed the child's identity, and state investigators have opened a probe that raises immediate questions about police use-of-force during shoplifting responses.
Kohen Wiley, a 1-year-old child, is dead after a Mississippi police officer shot into a car and killed him. Family members say his mother was holding him in the passenger seat. The officers were responding to a shoplifting call over a box of diapers at the Senatobia Walmart.
Police allege that the car was driving toward them when the officer fired into the car, killing Kohen Wiley and critically injuring an adult, whom his family said was his aunt. Some witnesses dispute that account and a cellphone video shows the car driving away from officers, but not the shooting.
If you see someone shoplifting diapers, no you didn't.
If you see people stealing diapers no, you didn't.
“Juvenile child fleeing”. Jesus Christ on a cracker
stealing diapers is not a capital offense.
If the witness account and the cell-phone video turn out to be telling more or less the whole story, the cop needs to be convicted of murder. Video and witnesses say the car was already driving AWAY from officers BEFORE the gunfire.
multiple layers of fucking horrible here, but I’m wondering what the person that got a baby boy murdered to protect the profit margins of Pampers and Walmart is thinking right now
No one should be shot and killed over diapers.
Quietly repeating to myself "I don't believe in the death penalty, even for cops." over and over and over.
One thing cops sure love is killing unarmed children and dogs.
Not only is this tragic, it's insane. There are people who steal millions and billions of dollars & this country worships them, but steal some diapers and it is a death penalty.
There is no Universe in which anything that can be found at Walmart is a fair exchange for a human life. The normal way to deal with shoplifting is to let people go, observe for a pattern, and then address the pattern when it starts again. ACAB, but especially the murderer of that little child.
Jesus Christ, words can not describe how much I loathe fucking cops.
Another day in America, another story of abject evil by people who shouldn't have power over any community but somehow wield the power of life and death over others
Another day of bastard cops killing the innocent. Another day crying.
Officers who draw weapons and fire over a shoplifting call should go to jail forever even if they don't hit anyone. They aren't safe around society.
"... bullet hole through the passenger side window." Must be one of those cars that attacks sideways.
Shoplifting or not... shooting at humans for that type of "crime" is well beyond excessive force.
This doesn’t make any sense. What if the people who shoplifted diapers were really determined and started shooting back? Were these officers putting their lives on the line to prevent shoplifting of diapers? I don’t think so. Must be the racism.
In a just world the cop who pulled the trigger would be locked away for decades. Heartbreaking :(
What an awful, cruel and completely misjudged tragedy. This will haunt me. For Walmart to call the police over a box of diapers, and for the police officer to decide to shoot his gun into the car over the situation shows such lack of humanity. This country needs to reflect on its values. #Walmart
Since when does theft become a crime worthy of murder by Police? No judge, no trial.
I thought the LAPD shooting a nurse’s doodle while she’s celebrating the Knicks victory would be the most devastating thing I saw today, but apparently not.
I’m just numb. That beautiful baby boy & devastated family. Cops as perennial victims, “They (the cop murder victim) was xyz”. Cops have lost credibility with this. The “guns are always the first solution” mentality. The “shoot into the car because we can” certitude. The Cop “license to kill”.
The employee that felt the need to call police over a black person who allegedly took a pack of diapers is just as much a murderer as the officer who's first thought was to shoot into a car over alleged diaper theft instead of simply moving out of the way and recording the plate number to follow up
I hope they’re proud. They deserve a lifetime of misery and an unmourned death.
Cops murder black child. Again.
This is America, and always has been.
Over allegedly stealing diapers? Insane
I'm screaming! Do you know how many times I have seen videos of armed murderers being talked into surrendering, sometimes after hours of negotiations? And you are going to shoot ANYONE over petty shoplifting? Or murder someone over a lousy $20 bill? Prosecute, goddammit.
Murdered because of a a damn box of Diapers and it’s the parents that will be held responsible and while tRump and Republicans scream about crime , they’re the ones stealing BILLIONS OF DOLLARS from us and no one says a damn word.
Let me get this straight. If you steal 40B of taxpayer dollars and give it away while telling everyone you're doing it, its ok, but if you ALLEGEDLY steal a box of 20.00 diapers, its an instant death penalty?
It's always their UTTER lack of remorse that enrages me. They never even try to pretend they feel bad about killing an innocent.
Shoplifters should never die for shoplifting, let alone innocent bystanders. This is monstrous.
Been thinking about this one a lot. What an indictment of our society and its priorities :(
Are police officers actually trained in the US? They just appear to be trigger happy thugs.
And just as heartbreaking as the story itself is the joy stories like this bring to republican voters.
Being the child of a desperate, impoverished parent should never be a death sentence— and desperate, impoverished parents should not exist.
“driving toward them” = cop stepped in front of a moving car to provide justification for shooting
I'm starting to think: "was driving at officer" is just code for: "was trying to leave so we shot them"
Real life becoming more like the movies everyday.
Everything about this story is horrific and heartbreaking.
Suspected shoplifting is not a crime punishable by death.
FFS. If I see someone taking food, diapers or formula…I didn’t see nothing.
Oh shooting INTO a car for “possibly” shoplifting diapers is OK in Mississippi
Does anyone know if there is a GoFundMe for the family/survivors?
Diapers. I hate it here.
A country with armed cops is one where shoplifting is a potentially capital offense, even if you're a baby.
Were they afraid for their lives?
Premeditated murder. No person not intent on murdering someone would ever pull a gun on someone over a misdemeanor shoplifting charge..
who calls the police over stolen diapers? we should all leave cases of formula and diapers outside big stores.
Over accusations of shoplifting. Jesus Christ
Where is the list of Walmart executives to contact about this atrocity?! Why are taxpayers funding Walmart workers while ppl resort to stealing diapers???
So basically if you steal diapers for your child, cops will kill your child.
That WIC doesn’t cover diapers is totally outrageous.
We & his family will never know what greatness Kohen could have achieved because of a cop's bullet over "shoplifted" diapers. A few days ago, it was a woman's dog. Screaming, tears echo through the country. So much is lost b/c we invent crimes & use guns to quell the invented crimes. Ugh.
Why, why, why can’t they just take the license plate and find them later? Why shoot into a car full of people? Why the Nazi tactics?
And there are liberals who think we just need to train these pigs. ACAB
All while lawmakers in MS are worried about abortion.
💔 No one should lose a child over their inability to pay for diapers.
The police are not there to protect us.
So the cops are baby killers.
U.S. has various official death squads. Local police forces are part of that extrajudicial killing network.
A box of diapers. The value of a life. What's the price of accountability?
They murdered a baby over stolen diapers? This is Victor Hugo level depravity, or perhaps "Charles Dickens working out his childhood trauma in serial format" evil. Like, how do these people even live with themselves, and BTW I'm completely open to the concept of internal exile for all of them.
May this pig be haunted by the face of this child and never sleep another night until finally they just concede to the rope
the world should not tolerate this abominable nation that regularly kills its own children with guns, and then kills children abroad with bombs
This would always be evil, but that it was over *diapers* makes it diabolical
This is absolutely heartbreaking! I can guarantee that if this story is on X or threads there are thousands of bigots defending the police!
i Just can’t. cruel trigger happy cop killing a child in the arms of his mama.
I hate how fvcked up, upside down our world is today. The rich get richer & evade justice & the poor have to shoplift diapers to keep their babies clean & healthy while the fvcking police shoot @them & kill their baby 💔😡
This is absolutely enraging and heartbreaking all at once.
That we live in a world where a sentence can possibly include both the words “child” and “gunfire” reinforces we are a failed society.
I'm sad and angry at the same time. So sorry another child has died from a shooting. and so angry at the police for shooting him.
inexpressible rage cannot wait to find out who called this in and i hope they are publicly humiliated until they show remorse
Why the F*** do they shoot on shoplifters???????
Least pro-life society in the world right here
They’ll find something to dismiss the charges on the officer…if they’re filed. I know how this plays out…victim is too dark for justice the age plays no factor.
This officer needs to be suspended without pay while this matter is investigated. You do not kill people over a box of diapers.
Heartbreaking. They killed a baby, not a juvenile child, like the police statement is phrasing it. Like that makes any difference, they killed a beautiful baby boy.
Even if (big if) the car was driven towards officers, what possible justification is there for shooting at the passenger side?
Black + child? The officer will now become the most respected employee at his department after this.
Imagine the fucking anguish. Chist.
Over a box of diapers? Can’t wait for the body camera footage.
That sweet child is guilty of nothing. He was murdered by the police shooting into a car. For SUSPECTED shoplifting of diapers. We are the shithole country now.
Heartbreaking and enraging. I want to tear these law enforcement organizations down to their foundations. In particular, every black man, woman and child in the U.S.A deserves better.
I don’t even have words for this
It's a rather severe response to someone carrying a box of diapers out of a store. RIP little one..
“the DPS statement appears to acknowledge that police witnessed the presence of Kohen Wiley prior to the individuals entering their vehicle, and before the officer discharged the weapon.”
Was the car “moving towards him”?
LET THEM HAVE THE GOD DAMN DIAPERS FOR FUCKING FREE. wow!! arrest him, toss the key away, he has ended a new life!!
And the majority of police officers who see this story will think first of the PR nightmare that the stories is, and not the tragedy of a baby getting killed for an alleged shoplifting.
"Kohen Wiley was a baby. His mother, who has not been charged with any crime, says she was trying to communicate to officers that there was a baby in the car" "They fired anyway, leading to the death of an innocent 1-year-old.
They look like they're cosplaying as fascist thugs.
I respect our soldiers, but…When police departments continue to hire former combat vets they are not hiring peace officers.
what possible reason have they offered for opening fire? what threat to life was presented by fleeing accused shop lifters?
Also, no money can repay for the loss of a baby's life.
I am beyond speech at this point.
And you wonder why people hate cops. FFS.
We’ve been here before. It’s like déja vu all over again.
These people are just evil through and through! 😢
I’ve been thinking of Kohen Wiley and his family all day. I cannot begin to inhabit the mind of a man who would shoot at two women and a baby over some stolen diapers. Evil. Evil.
For that matter I cannot inhabit the mind of someone who would see a woman with a baby stealing diapers and not look the other way or intervene and pay for them myself
“Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver drove in the direction of the officers, almost striking one” they’re just going to keep going with this one, forever and ever, even when they’re demonstrably lying
Two women and a baby that were moving "away" from you, no less.
The police “felt” that the mom might be shoplifting “DIAPERS.” Diapers!!!
I don’t care if she backed up a U-Haul to load up with diapers, no one should ever, ever be shot for shoplifting. I don’t know if my mind and my heart can withstand the incredible ease with which our society murders people. A baby. My god. 💔
There better be murder charges. I’m sure that sweet baby wasn’t a threat.
The murdering of black Americans by white surpremacist organzations masquerading as "law enforcement" continues unabated.
Senatobia, Mississippi police opened fire in a public setting allegedly over some Pampers. 🤬 wreg.com/news/its-jus...
Awful, unnecessary, unacceptable, and infuriating. My heart goes out to this family.
I work in a thrift shop and the policy for shoplifters is “leave them be.” No one would ever call the police. If they stole the diapers, it was probably out of necessity. Many countries in Europe provide free diapers for their citizens. How awful for this family. Shame on Wal-Mart.
Wouldn’t have shot a white mother and baby
I have no words. This is the third incident I’ve heard about this week where police used excessive force and lives were lost.
💔for Kohen. Hope she survives. Not optimistic in MS.
