Workers pour hydrogen peroxide into Lincoln Reflecting Pool to kill algae

newsJun 16, 202623237,697

National Park Service workers poured gallons of hydrogen peroxide into the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on June 16, 2026, to fight a heavy algae bloom. Foam floated across the surface as technicians hand-poured bottles around the pool perimeter following recent renovations that coincided with the bloom. Hydrogen peroxide is typically used to treat toxic cyanobacteria, and effective dosing for a landmark pool this size requires concentrated solutions and large volumes that can injure fish and waterfowl. The treatment matters because it exposes a high-profile public landmark and local wildlife to chemical risk and raises questions about maintenance choices after costly renovations.

RIP Mark Rothko. You would have loved how the hydrogen peroxide bleach is only turning the Reflecting Pool blue around the perimeter

I still think the algae would make a better president than Trump, though.

Ok, that's actually beautiful. In a Rothko sort of way.

uniongal.bsky.social83

Omg, that is hilarious. It’s the absolute chefs kiss of a metaphor for this presidency. An over priced, poorly planned boondoggle that is done half asses at twice the cost and achieves nothing intended and remediation only works to manage less than 5%. The blue perimeter presidency.

They can dump hydrogen peroxide til the cows come home and it’s not going to do shit. I have no doubt however, that it’s going to do a number on that shitty blue paint.

Has any of that hydrogen peroxide been “liberated” to redo the 86 47 on the lawn nearby? If you saw this, oh, no you didn’t!

Trump needs to have RFK Jr. swim around in the Reflecting Pool to mix in the hydrogen peroxide.

I hope we invoice Trump for the stinking mess he has created in Washington DC. Will he be liable for the 3/4 billion he owes New York when he leaves office? Let’s at least make him pay for all the damage he has done to our Capitol.

Did you see the little jugs of bleach they were using? do they forget Trump’s charts that it’s bigger than the Empire State Building?

recoveringxer.bsky.social24

"Quick and dirty" is how Trump approaches renovations and war. He tried to improve on the JCPOA with what he thought would be quick military action and made it worse. His mistakes cost lives and $$$.

detoxthegop.bsky.social19

This may improve the algae situation, but only short term. Hydrogen Peroxide H2O2 will decompose and when it does, the algae will come back two fold. This is what the incompetent does .. makes things worse.

unitystudios.bsky.social19

How will this affect the wildlife? Just yesterday saw a bunch of ducklings swimming there.

BornToBark17

If they want it to look like a swimming pool, they’re going to have to manage it like a swimming pool. And that’s a lot of work. It might help to continuously circulate Potomac water in and out to the river so the algae doesn’t just sit there and thrive - but it would take a lot of circulation.

So... we're going to have blonde ducks?

Creator of Hambee3

dc getting “beautified” like a flip house

Mack Steele3

This, like all Republican efforts is doomed to fail Too stupid to know they are stupid

Greeneyedlady3

That will kill the ducks and other wildlife

Ham Roids3

How'd they just refill it and ALREADY have a massive algae problem? Like they just make everything worse, like the Midas touch but instead of gold everything turns to shit

Dan Davis3

Breaking: DC area Home Depots warn of sudden run on hydrogen peroxide.

cirrhosis of the rye3

Do you want bleach-blond pond scum? Because this is how you get bleach-blond pond scum

Aurora3

They should have just painted the thing Algae Green. And been done w it.

Algae, like rust, never sleeps.

not only did he not drain the swamp- he actually made it bigger and stuck it right out in front of the capitol

BFox1352

I'm gonna laugh so hard when they find out the paint Is ruined by the peroxide

🏳️‍⚧️Catherine of Leeds2

I bet they are charging $10k a bottle!!

Rik Basterd2

Tomorrow they are bringing in the dump truck full of baking soda.

Hextella2

Everyone on capital hill is going to be high af off bleach fumes before that pool turns a shade of “anything resembling not verdant”

NO OBEYANCE IN ADVANCE2

They need bigger and many many more bottles for that amount of water plus a new filtration system with ongoing anti-algae chemicals to keep it fully free from algae over the long term.. and also more consistent water movement which prevents algae from forming. Its all about science.

Indybhoffman2

It's almost as if they had absolutely no idea what they were doing when they "improved" the reflecting pool.

Blame Tag 🏷️2

I love that their attitude towards the reflecting pool was "If it ain't fix, broke it!".

T2

Green is more appropriate as it's the color of money and of envy, both of which power this administration.

eggai2

isnt this what u use chlorine for

Stephen Smith 🇨🇦2

Surprised they aren’t using ivermectin. Cures all.

Howard Roark2

Tomorrow- large numbers of dead birds surround the DC reflecting pool

Krisi 🏳️‍⚧️2

They tried this in Florida a few years ago when they were having massive algae blooms. Spoiler, it didn't work. floridaphoenix.com/2023/09/14/u...

Reverend Lucifer Johnson2

it’s fine chatgtp said this will fix it

Queer and Pleasant Danger2

And, because it's government work, each one of those bottle cost $150,000.

"'Y'all, not to be a huge nerd but for the reflecting pool you would need a minimum of about 8000 liters of 12% hydrogen peroxide to reach the 50 parts per million concentration to kill algae. Is this what happens when you have 0 scientists in your administration?" The US Government in a nutshell.

Aurélien Morel (pew pews en tout genre)26

It's homeopatic hydrogen peroxide. It's diluted so it's even more powerful.

Just a gardener 💙💛16

The sad thing is that, if they are actually NPS employees, they know what they are doing is futile, they are being blamed, and they knew the painting debacle was not a good plan. Just demoralizing. Hang in there NPS, if you can. We know it's not your fault.

ShiftKicker10

Really dilute hydrogen peroxide can be a growth booster in aquatic flora too. So they may be boosting algae growth if they're just chucking minimal amounts in and not the actual volume required to actually limit algal growth.

Nigel Garbage7

Verified the same. It's only gonna get worse as painting the concrete a dark color leads to more heat absorption from the sun's rays and higher water temps. Lol. Dipshittery all around.

Ben Taylor4

When that algal bloom does die it's going to start decomposing. That will use up the oxygen in the water. Then you're going to have an anoxic pool full of dead organic matter. That'll smell nice.

Zoe Samuel4

Gosh how many liters to do a skyscraper though

proud rebel scum ⚛️3

you just made the algae angry 🤣

Carl Alexander2

Have Trump bathe in it...that will kill every living thing in it.

Carla, Trantifa President2

i would have expected a pumper truck to unload the amount of hydrogen peroxide needed

Vague Pariah2

H2O2 comes in higher concentrations. It is also commonly used to treat string algae. They are not necessarily trying to raise the concentration of the whole volume but raise it locally long enough to kill a bunch of algae and then vacuum up that dead algae.

Sky Marchini
@sky.skymarchini.net

i'm sorry, the admin was so desperate to get rid of the algae they had a bunch of guys pouring 12% hydrogen peroxide in by hand at 6am?

They're still there doing shit, by the way

Musicology Duck53

everything I’ve seen out there this week reminds me of the old adage about emptying the ocean with a teaspoon…somewhere between two and ten workers doing something that looks absolutely futile in that gigantic pool

Kevin Kostka35

Perfect microcosm of Trump II. An attempted temporary fix using the wrong thing in the wrong amount done the wrong way. Like, peroxide can do that, but you'd need to use stronger solutions, in higher amounts, introduced at inflow, and done regularly. This is doing approximately nothing.

Head Like a Hijacker24

My math is likely off, but the point still stands

The Rev. Andy McQuery18

No, the pool is just going blonde for Pride

Justin Wallace16

I will never live down the shame of how completely fucking stupid the lot of them are.

Sagittarius A*14

gonna need a lot of those jugs also that won't work for long

Shimmersoft9

I don't know anything about cleaning algae but I have to imagine that the federal government can afford a more elegant solution than buying a pallet of hydrogen peroxide from home depot

Should try some vinegar and baking soda.

We are being governed by morons. 🤦‍♀️

Colin Elves4

Oh sweet. Let me know when they get desperate and start adding the bleach.

kikishelf.bsky.social3

Will that hurt the ducks?

Bishop Whitewind3

Shouldn't they be using chlorine? This just keeps getting dumber the more I think about it like has no one Donald Trump the "hotel baron" ever met ever seen a swimming pool before? Can they not afford a pool boy? Maybe they burned through their supply during the Epstein escapades?

Alan Kelly2

That’s a bleach of the piece

I’ve heard ivermectin should do the trick

Rick Miskowski 🏜️9

What about thoughts and prayers.

Kinda symbolic of everything trump does.

Peter4

Just how many Trump screwups do we have to endure before we realize that the old guy's brain doesn't work, and probably was not all that great in his prime, king of bankruptcy, but now he is failing as brain rot becomes the path downward.

Angeleno Bob4

I know it's supposed to be a reflecting pool with a smooth surface, but Disney knows, circulation is the key. And who doesn't know it gets hot in the summer? I guess it's the same people that don't know that a dark surface on a pool bottom will heat the water and encourage growth.

PhoenixDogLover4

Hydrogen Peroxide in the small quantities they are using will actually accelerate algae growth, because dilute peroxide breaks down, releasing oxygen quickly. Algae loves sunlight and oxygen.

Think Walmart has pool shock on sale. What a disaster, another in a long list of disasters created by the felon Donald Trump.

Peter Principle2

Sort of like Trump himself: No matter how hard his people try to fix him up, he's still scum.

Dave Owsiany2

Well known that dark colors absorb more light , generating more heat than light colors. So the dark blue paint causes the water to heat more quickly, making an environment even more conducive to algae growth. Ain’t science diabolical ?
