France confirms first Ebola case from doctor returning from DRC

scienceJun 24, 202615273

France's health ministry confirmed its first Ebola case of the current outbreak in a doctor who returned from a humanitarian mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo; authorities isolated the patient on arrival and the doctor is receiving care in France. The infection is linked to the ongoing DRC outbreak, which has reached 1,094 confirmed cases and more than 260 deaths. French officials have launched contact tracing and established a dedicated monitoring system for aid workers returning from the DRC. The case matters because it demonstrates that international travel can export Ebola beyond the DRC and is prompting European governments to strengthen screening and preparedness for returning responders and travelers.
