Report links COVID vaccination to a newly observed side effect in older adults

A new study of more than 1 million U.S. veterans found that older adults who received the latest COVID-19 vaccine had a significantly lower risk of major adverse cardiovascular events, including heart attacks, strokes, heart failure hospitalizations, and cardiovascular death. Researchers observed these reductions when comparing vaccinated older adults with unvaccinated peers, and the result aligns with other research showing routine vaccines can have protective effects against conditions such as dementia. Because heart attacks and strokes are leading causes of illness and death in older adults, this protective effect may strengthen the risk-benefit case for vaccinating older populations and influence clinical recommendations.
