Postmaster General tells Senate USPS won't mail ballots without voter lists

newsJun 24, 2026313,595

Postmaster General David Steiner told the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee that under a proposed USPS rule tied to President Trump’s order the Postal Service would not deliver mail ballots in states that refuse to provide unredacted absentee and mail-voter lists to the federal government. When Democratic Sen. Gary Peters asked whether the USPS would mail ballots for such states, Steiner replied, "Under our proposed regulation, no," directly contradicting a prior USPS rule stating the agency "does not administer elections" or determine how jurisdictions use the mail. If implemented, the policy would force states to hand over sensitive voter data or risk withholding ballots from millions who rely on vote-by-mail, including seniors, disabled voters, military members and rural residents, and would likely trigger constitutional and state-rights legal challenges over election administration.

Can't wait go see the Postmaster General lose in court.

Blaring grinder37

When did the USPS become a regulatory agency?

zobear.bsky.social23

Something something US Constitution Article I, Section 4

AKA Pippysqueakspeaks 🐶18

In other words, all the blue states, including mine, New Jersey. Be prepared for plan B.

Taco the Cat18

Do mail-in ballots have to be delivered by USPS? Or could a state contract with UPS or DHL for the ballots. I mean, they deliver everywhere and could set up temporary boxes of needed.

Solde15

There are so many bastards in top positions that simply hate the idea of America.

Roblee1415

This stinks of Stephen Miller

ravenalessia.bsky.social13

18 U.S.C. § 595 prohibits election interference by administrative employees of Federal, State, or Territorial governments. No regulation supersedes the law. Sounds like this regulation should be challenged in court

Spence Reynaldo11

He must be really sure only democrats vote by mail to screw so many people over this way. His approval rating is approaching 30%. He will lose the midterms regardless.

@KeepItBlueDems.bsky.social10

We'll have to Fire the postmaster general.

Roblee148

The courts have been saying states don't have to give up anything this is trumps attempt to coerce them

debbiefr.bsky.social7

is it time yet to go to court for an injunction?

Nonningham7

Fun fact: 18 U.S.C. § 241 conspiracy against rights does not require an overt act in furtherance of the crime. It is enough to simply state his intent to follow Trump's order to interfere with ballot delivery.

Madison6

🚨VOTE! Check you haven’t been purged from the voter rolls at least 30 days before midterms. Request a Mail-In-Ballot. Drop off personally or mail back using FEDEX or UPS. *USPS is COMPROMISED!

Linda D6

We are rural and there is no polling place here. Voting by mail is the only option available to us here in central CA Well, on the bright side, I do live in a heavily red district so 😂 jokes on him I guess, cuz if I can't vote neither can any of his voters here in Kevin McCarthys old district

itbeatstwitter.bsky.social6

Isn’t refusing to deliver US mail that has a stamp snd proper postage a crime?

vegaskat.bsky.social5

It's an unconstitutional rule It's not even up for debate The US Constitution mandate mail be delivered

I Have To Say This 🇦🇺5

If this is actually legal, welcome to your Banana Republic, America. #FailedState #DumpTrump #TrumpIsACriminal #StopTheFascists

This is the plan to disenfranchise voters.

I hope Marc Elias & his Team are on top of this. Damn, this is exhausting.

Divine Discontent4

It's going to be pretty damned embarrassing for the postmaster general to lose in a court case - but, alas, this where we're at, where incompetent men are being put into positions of power who have no business being there. #MailInVoting #RegisterToVote #Voting

coachdondelotell.bsky.social4

That’s an L—can’t do that—postal service job is to safely “deliver mail” and not decide who can vote—Fuck ‘em

tzigan.bsky.social3

He doesn't have the power to do this and it's not within his responsibilities.

chitobandito.bsky.social3

The business of USPS is to deliver mail ASAP, not to pick and choose who gets their mail. Lock him up for election interference!

Nice to meet you.3

"Dump’s radical executive order is already facing legal challenges from states and voting rights groups."

Sounds like a crime to me. Isn’t it illegal to divert mail from its intended recipient?

tbluvoter❌👑3

llegally. "There's nowhere in the Constitution, there's no federal law that the Postal Service is authorized to create these types of voter databases, ballot verification systems, or mandatory standard...just because President Trump wants to do this does not make it law" youtu.be/TGsDCBrzT7Y?...

He has no authority to do this and should be impeached immediately.

A federal agency threatening states it doesn’t like is peak authoritarianism. We’re there.

Adam Sullivan2

Sounds like a great moment to take him to court. If memory serves me correctly, it's a felony to steal someone's mail. So if he thinks getting over a million felonies is worth it, I doubt he is that committed.

Kim2

And that needs to nipped in the bud in court pronto

Why would any state hand over data about their residents. Hopefully, states will figure out safe ways to allow voters to mail their ballot but bypass the partisan USPS. What a shameful turn of events.

Postmaster General is threatening to interfere with Free and Fair Elections. Any state AG or Election officials going to investigate this?

Beverley Kendall Author 👩🏾‍💻📖🇨🇦🇺🇸🇬🇾 💙2

And then people wonder whether they’ve ever rigged an election. 🙄

youvotedforthis2.bsky.social2

Unacceptable! Neither the federal government nor the USPS have authority over state-run elections!

Doc0002

Isn't there a law or something against messing with the mail?

Carey2

And what gives him the authority to f*ck with elections?

Wow! Orban gone, Oligarchs in Russia pulling defense systems to guard their compounds against drone strikes and Putin cornered - and in America - games played by Orban and Putin being tried - how will Americans respond (GOP + 6 in SCOTUS will be not on our side) - anybody knows how this is played!

Postmaster General David Steiner's admission conflicted with a rule the USPS adopted under his watch last year. The rule said the agency “does not administer elections, establish the rules or deadlines that govern elections, or determine whether or how election jurisdictions utilize the mail.”

The desperation to suppress the vote is getting hot. Free and fair is a tough rule for fascists to follow.

@KeepItBlueDems.bsky.social6

We'll have to get rid of him when we take back the House & Senate.

Steiner’s admission Wednesday conflicted with a separate rule the USPS adopted last year, which stated that the independent agency “does not administer elections, establish the rules or deadlines that govern elections, or determine whether or how election jurisdictions utilize the mail.”

Laws mean nothing to them.

Betty Perry-Fingal3

Someone needs to educate Mr. Steiner about the rights of American citizens and remind him that the postal service is there to serve the people.

Scott Equaliholic3

This nazi pig needs to be arrested. Tampering with mail is a federal offense - Chapter 83—Postal Service of the U.S. Code. Sections 1701 through 1710 are related to the obstruction, destruction and theft of mail and mail-related property.

Washington state has drop boxes that are controlled by the Election Commission; thereby bypassing the USPS.

USPS is only allowing "public" comments due by 7/2/2026 either by snail mail or email. There is no online option.
