Speaker Johnson aims to pass SAVE America Act via reconciliation

newsJun 25, 2026531,149

Speaker Mike Johnson said Wednesday he will try to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, known as the SAVE America Act, by folding it into a third budget reconciliation package. The bill would impose federal documentary proof-of-citizenship and stricter voter-identification requirements that Vote.org says would fundamentally change how Americans register and vote. The Senate Parliamentarian has ruled key provisions non-germane to reconciliation, meaning a procedural adviser could block their inclusion and any reconciliation path would be contested. A bloc of conservative House members has frozen much House floor activity, demanding the SAVE Act be advanced before other business proceeds. President Donald Trump has held up a bipartisan housing bill, canceling its signing and urging Congress to pass the SAVE Act first. If Johnson pushes the bill through reconciliation and the Parliamentarian allows it, supporters could pass it by simple-majority in the Senate; if not, the measure would face a filibuster and likely stall. Johnson's announcement creates an immediate procedural showdown that will shape House scheduling, the fate of the housing bill, and intra-GOP unity ahead of the November midterms.

A group of conservative hard-liners have effectively ground most House floor action to a halt until Congress acts on the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act.

Can we please stop calling these people "conservative"?

Ground it to a halt? Isn’t that the basic level of activity for this Congress?

AllCaps-2213

How will we be able to tell?

@BohunkHusker11

It already got voted down. You should make the proper headline. " Trump's demand for passing the SAVE act, after its failure, activates terrorist cell of Trump sycophants in House, to stop the people's work"

David Bailey10

If memory serves, Congress already acted on the SAVE Republicans act. Congress rejected it.

Why didn’t you mention it was already voted down!?

Question for people more informed about elections than I: at what point would it be too late to realistically implement the SAVE Act? You’d think they’re almost out of time, but this SCOTUS would probably give it the ok for the midterms even if it passed on Halloween, so…🤷

If no legislation gets passed that’s ok with me.

Ground it to a halt?? Hasn’t that basically been the state of affairs all term?!

bpatter49.bsky.social2

Its not like they are creating a lot of legislation as it is so will we actually notice?

Sure, go ahead. Vote on it. But make sure you vote it down or we are coming for your seats.

I’m fine with Congress grinding to a halt if it means they can’t strip away our voting rights. November is not that far off now and they accomplish next to nothing at best.
