Speaker Johnson aims to pass SAVE America Act via reconciliation

newsJun 25, 202631526

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said Wednesday he will try to advance the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, called the SAVE America Act, through a third budget reconciliation package. The SAVE Act would federalize stricter voter identification rules, requiring documents such as a passport or birth certificate that match a registrant's current legal name, and advocacy groups estimate the change could disenfranchise as many as 69 million women. The effort faces procedural and political barriers: the Senate parliamentarian has ruled SAVE non-germane to reconciliation, many Senate Republicans oppose fast-tracking it, and President Donald Trump has demanded passage while delaying a bipartisan housing bill until Congress moves on SAVE. If Johnson proceeds with reconciliation 3.0, Republicans would try to enact the measure with a simple Senate majority, a maneuver that would bypass the filibuster and further freeze unrelated House floor business.
