Türkiye scored in the 98th minute at SoFi Stadium to beat the United States 3-2, denying the U.S. a perfect group-stage record. The stoppage-time goal closed Group D play with the U.S. finishing top of the group on six points. The Americans had already secured first place and will meet Bosnia and Herzegovina in the World Cup Round of 32 on July 1 in Santa Clara, California. The U.S. used a reserve-heavy lineup, mounted a second-half fight-back, and saw the return of Christian Pulisic. While the loss does not alter the U.S. bracket position, the late defeat is an emotional setback ahead of the knockout match.

Scoreboard is what it is, so they lost ... though they're in position to assess the game overall instead of just the score ... and to that extent, they probably outplayed Turkey. They just suck at defense and failed to capitalize on a few excellent opportunities.

FT: #usmnt 2-3 Türkiye. Tough to know what to feel after this. The late goal is a gut punch for sure. But there were some players, Berhalter among them, who grew into the game & will be better for it. Pulisic's return provides hope. For sure, the U.S. will know that nothing can be taken for granted.
