Inquiry says white working-class children 'failed' by schools system
"White working class children can never fail. They can only be failed. 🤡" Important: the non-white working class children in England are the children of colonized people. UK school kids from India, Nigeria 🙋🏿♂️, Pakistan, Hong Kong, and Jamaica, are going to get good grades and work their tails off.
There was no extra textbook that they gave only to Black and brown kids when I went to school in England.🤷🏿♂️ I still remember getting caned (yes, corporal punishment) for "insubordination," for a fun little exchange with a teacher who was made that I kept getting the highest score on my class.
It's never the fault of the parents or the culture, when it comes to white kids. My parents had very high expectations for my performance in school, and there were consequences if I didn't live up to them.
The grade system that decides pass or fail in a society ruled by the wealthiest who failed is itself built to do the same. School is unpaid labor.
Our country is one of the most unfair in the West. The class you’re born into too often dictates what you can go onto achieve. White working class children feel that. Labour is focused on improving their education, giving them better chances, better choices, and better lives.
And in what way are you supporting trans children, Bridget, because I keep reading about how terrified the trans community is and how far backwards we have gone *since the Tories left office*, which, as a Labour member, I would not have thought possible.
Keep going. If you are annoying the Tories, you must be doing the right thing. P.S. If the Labour Party printed and sold ‘Spiteful Class Warrior’ slogans and used the proceeds to support the poorest kids more, I would certainly buy one.
Why add 'white'? Surely, all working class children.
My grandparents were all extremely poor, but the one thing they did was to focus on their children's education. They had books, they encouraged (a lot) and pushed them all so's they could escape their awful poor backgrounds. I don't feel this is happening any more.
I see the Beeb and Blue Labour are excited about the "white working class" report into schools whose most significant result - by an order of magnitude - is that poor children do half as well. That's the conclusion. Every other factor is much smaller. "Austerity damages kids" is the headline.
Should we address the most significant factor and raise all kids out of ... WHAT ABOUT THE WHITE KIDS!!?!
"BUT WHAT ABOUT THE WHITE CHILDREN??!1?" Fucking listen to yourselves.
Reminds me of Cameron's pointers to troubled families. Pretty much all of them boiled down to the family doesn't have enough money
One way that demonstrably tackles this is free high quality child care for children. European experiences show that poorer kids academic success increases with no loss to that of wealthier kids. And the parents get to do whatever work they like, and pay more tax so it pays for itself.
If a child is struggling at school, the solution cannot be 'get a trade'. Do you know how difficult it is to becomes a qualified tradesperson?? The solution is to make the system do a better job of persuading white working class familes who are disillusioned to see the value of education.
parents failed by the education system and are cynical about education. your kids bring home homework you can't make sense of, but you got by without it, are you going to encourage them? The state is partially responsible for education. We do the rest at home. Reviews always miss this
Agreed. I used to work in the construction industry, and quite apart from there being a maximum number of apprentices that can be taken on safely, no kid will even get to start without basic maths skills. Even painters need to be able to work out how much paint they'll need.
Got a special needs child (adult now). Autistic and learning disabled, neither diagnosed at school and any attention we tried to bring to it boiled down to “we can’t do anything else for her”. Was withdrawn from formal education at 15. They were going to do 8 and a half GCSE’s with predicted E/F.
It’s interesting that although Baromess says ‘this cannot sit with schools alone,’ aside from ‘free buses’ there is no mention at all of anything other than flaws in school that could be behind these stats. What have you noticed when you’ve been been in schools?
(Also laughable that Phillipson uses it as an attempt to score political points and even that they offer ‘more opportunities in the arts’ the curriculum and cuts have decimated arts in schools.)
'Overall, 52 per cent of white working-class pupils told researchers that they were likely to attend university, versus 82 per cent of their peers.' Bit of a disconnect with the Time Higher deadline, then? 1/2
'It also argues that young people should not feel they have to leave home or take on “excessive financial risk” to access high-quality higher education.' Close local programmes & leaving home to access provision becomes the alternative to not entering HE at all. Cold spots freeze opportunity. 2/2
Burnham is right to create vocational training paths for the working class, but this also has happen alongside pathways to the university. and for this reason, the State has to step in and stop the butchering of Nottingham, Edinburgh, and Exeter.
Maybe the relevant comparison would be with working-class pupils in general. Why restrict it to white pupils?
* 'Times' not 'Time' and 'headline' not 'deadline'. Blaming predictive text, a long day and abominable typing skills.
