Canada Day fireworks and evening events canceled in Ottawa after storms

cultureJul 2, 2026462,012

Canada Day evening events at LeBreton Flats in Ottawa, including the planned fireworks display, were cancelled after prolonged severe thunderstorms brought strong winds, heavy rain, lightning and hail warnings. Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke to several thousand people near Parliament Hill during daytime celebrations but his evening trip to Edmonton was cancelled after weather in Ottawa delayed flights and prevented his plane from taking off; more than a dozen Ottawa departures were cancelled. Jeremy Hansen, who flew on NASA’s Artemis 2 mission earlier this year, appeared on stage after Carney and addressed the crowd. Organizers and Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning and cautioned about flash flooding; some attendees sought shelter at the nearby Canadian War Museum as conditions worsened. Canadian Heritage publicly announced the cancellation of the LeBreton Flats evening show and fireworks because of the extreme weather. The storm disrupted official Ottawa programming while other Canada Day gatherings proceeded across the country.
