Sarah Schwartz targeted with online abuse over Gaza advocacy

Sarah Schwartz, executive director of the Jewish Council of Australia, told the Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion that she has been subjected to an online harassment campaign by pro-Israel and neo-Nazi groups because of her advocacy for Palestinian people. Schwartz said she received a voluminous number of offensive messages from what she described as high-profile pro-Israel actors and was called a "traitor" and "Hitler's Jew," and sent images depicting her wearing a yellow star and riding a train to a concentration camp. The Jewish Council of Australia, set up after the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel, says it represents about 2,500 Jewish people who support Palestinians. Schwartz told the commission she believes the abuse is tied to her criticism of the Israeli government and that Jewish critics of Israel routinely have their Jewishness questioned. She said government responses have focused antisemitism enforcement on the pro-Palestine movement and policing protest expression, which she argued hampers interfaith work. Schwartz also told the commission she contacted Victoria Police after far-right groups obtained her personal information, and that police filed a personal protection order on her behalf without her knowledge, a step she only learned about when contacted by a journalist. The commission is due to hear evidence from NSW Police and the eSafety Commissioner today.
