Pubs allowed to stay open until 5am for England v Mexico World Cup match

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced a U-turn allowing pubs in England and Wales to stay open until 05:00 on Monday so fans can watch England's World Cup round-of-16 match with Mexico to the final whistle. The Mexico City game kicks off at 01:00 UK time. The government had previously said it would not relax licensing laws further than existing World Cup extensions, which already allow openings to 01:00 for evening kick-offs and up to 02:00 for later fixtures. Emma McClarkin, chief executive of the British Beer and Pub Association, and Michael Kill, chief executive of the Night Time Industries Association, welcomed the change. Safety concerns were flagged: the motoring organisation RAC advised people who stay up should not drive until fully rested and hydrated, with spokesperson Rod Dennis warning that tiredness, dehydration and alcohol can be a lethal combination. The CIPD told employers they are under no obligation to make special arrangements for Monday and said any workplace flexibility should be agreed in advance, according to director of profession David D'Souza.

When I worked in the area I'd occasionally visit the Fox and Anchor opposite Smithfield market very early in the morning. Despite it being the absolute dream when I was a teenager I would not advise. It's like giving yourself jetlag and takes days to recover.
