Reports: Trump plans to remove D.C. cherry trees for golf course work

newsJul 2, 202618373

The Washington Post reports President Donald Trump toured East Potomac Golf Links carrying detailed renderings that show a far more extensive redevelopment of the municipal course than federal officials have publicly disclosed. Photographs of the plans show the redesigned course stretching across nearly the entire East Potomac peninsula and extending play to the shoreline while omitting several public amenities shown on maps today, including the riverside bicycle trail, the miniature golf course and Washington’s oldest grove of cherry trees. Hundreds of cherry trees along the peninsula’s perimeter are not included in the drawing carried by Trump, and the plans would raze the White Course, where Japanese cherry trees planted in 1910 currently stand, to incorporate that area into a practice facility. The renderings leave the fate of the city’s oldest grove of cherry trees unclear; the report does not cite any formal approval or written decision confirming tree removal. The photographs were taken during Trump’s visit on Sunday and are the basis for the Post’s reporting that the visible plans appear more sweeping than previously disclosed federal descriptions of the project. Next steps likely include review by local and federal park authorities and potential public scrutiny because the redesign, as depicted, would alter existing parkland and public amenities on the East Potomac peninsula.

A new Washington Post report says Trump's golf course redevelopment plan would destroy "Washington's oldest grove of cherry trees," the sole survivors of Japan's original 1910 gift to America. www.rawstory.com/amp/trump-ch...
