Folarin Balogun cleared to play after FIFA suspends his ban

sportsJul 6, 2026512,124

Folarin Balogun will be available for the U.S. round-of-16 World Cup match against Belgium on Monday at Lumen Field after FIFA suspended the automatic one-game ban that followed his straight red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina for a foul on Tarik Muharemovic. FIFA said it invoked article 27 of its disciplinary code to suspend implementation of the suspension for a probationary period of one year, warning the suspension will be enforced if Balogun commits a similar infringement during that period. Multiple outlets reported that U.S. President Donald Trump called FIFA president Gianni Infantino asking for a review; Trump later posted, "Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice." U.S. players learned of the decision via social media on the team bus; Christian Pulisic said the news gave the team a boost and Chris Richards described Balogun's reaction as "Lit." U.S. Soccer said it accepted and was pleased with the decision. The Royal Belgian Football Association called the ruling "astonished," said it contradicted the competition regulations, and said it is exploring all potential options.

"Fifa will allow Folarin Balogun, the star striker of the US men’s national team, to play its knockout World Cup match against Belgium on Monday after a complaint from Donald Trump to football’s governing body." Trump disqualifies the US (as expected). www.ft.com/content/a858...

In a “highly unusual move”, FIFA completely reversed a one-match suspension for US Men’s National Team star striker Folarin Balogun ahead of the USA's World Cup knockout match against Belgium—following direct personal lobbying from Donald Trump. WHY ISN’T THE ENTIRE SPORTING WORLD IN UPROAR?
