Tottenham have completed the signing of Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United for a club-record fee that could reach £100m. The 26-year-old joins after three seasons at Newcastle in a deal reported as an initial £92.5m plus £7.5m in add-ons. Tonali said he spoke with Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi for close to two hours and that he knew immediately he had to sign for the club. He moved to Newcastle from AC Milan in July 2023 for £55m, was later banned for 10 months by the Italian FA over betting-rule breaches, then returned to help Newcastle win the 2025 Carabao Cup. Spurs have also signed Mateus Fernandes for £85m and could end up spending a combined £237m on Jan Paul van Hecke, Fernandes and Tonali. Sporting director Johan Lange and De Zerbi described Tonali as a special player with outstanding technical quality, and Tottenham can afford large transfers under the new squad-cost ratio rules that allow spending up to 85% of revenue.
