Tottenham have completed the signing of Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali for a club-record package worth an initial £92.5m plus £7.5m in add-ons, taking the total potential fee to £100m. The 26-year-old moves to Spurs after three seasons at Newcastle, where an earlier bid of around £80m was rejected before the clubs agreed terms. Tonali said he spoke with head coach Roberto De Zerbi for close to two hours and felt an immediate connection to the club, its fans and stadium. He joined Newcastle from AC Milan for £55m in July 2023, served a 10-month FIGC ban for breaching betting rules, then returned to help Newcastle win the Carabao Cup in 2025. Tonali follows Mateus Fernandes, signed this window for £85m, and Tottenham could spend a combined £237m on Jan Paul van Hecke, Fernandes and Tonali. Sporting director Johan Lange described Tonali as having outstanding technical quality and football intelligence, and Spurs’ ability to spend heavily is enabled by the new squad-cost ratio rules and their 2024-25 accounts showing wages and amortisation at 61% of revenue.
