La Liga president Javier Tebas told Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport that FIFA president Gianni Infantino should step down, saying "in my opinion, yes, I think his time is up" and accusing FIFA of "destroying the football industry." Tebas singled out mandatory three minute hydration breaks at North American stadiums, the World Cup final's lengthy half time, Infantino's openness to a 64 team tournament, and the postponement of a suspension for US striker Folarin Balogun as examples of irresponsible decisions. Tebas called FIFA's election system "rotten at its core," said Infantino nonetheless retains the support of national federations, and predicted Infantino will be re elected at FIFA's March congress. Tebas suggested the Balogun case, where US President Donald Trump intervened and Belgium later eliminated the USA, could have cost Infantino his job if circumstances had differed, and he called such incidents "just the tip of the iceberg." UEFA publicly criticised FIFA's decision over the Balogun suspension as "unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable," and UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin did not attend the World Cup final. Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter has also joined calls for Infantino to quit, amplifying the criticism from Tebas and others.
