Red Sox beat Blue Jays 6-4, Romy González delivers key RBI

The Boston Red Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-4 in Friday’s series opener as Romy González delivered a pinch-hit, go-ahead RBI double in the bottom of the eighth. Anthony Seigler went 4-for-5 with a home run, two doubles and two RBI, falling a triple short of the cycle and homering as the leadoff batter to open the scoring. Starter Patrick Sandoval survived a rocky first inning that included an error and two walks, then settled in while reliever Tyron Guerrero, who hit 103 mph on the gun, closed out a bases-loaded threat in the fifth. Willson Contreras dove into first and slid awkwardly into second during the game, was checked by trainers, and interim manager Chad Tracy said he is okay. The Red Sox have now won 21 of their last 24 games dating to June 25 and hold an MLB-best 16-2 record in July. Seigler and González both offered postgame comments emphasizing confidence and the team’s ability to rebound late in games.

The Astros won 9-5. They are 51-54. An eight-run sixth inning erased a 5-0 deficit. The Astros' bullpen threw eight innings of two-run ball in relief of an injured Spencer Arrighetti. Since May 1, Houston's bullpen has a 3.01 ERA. Only the Red Sox and Yankees have a lower one.
