Dylan Cease threw a one-hit complete-game shutout with 12 strikeouts and 120 pitches, leading the Toronto Blue Jays to a 6-0 win over the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. Cease carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before allowing a leadoff double to Andruw Monasterio; the final three strikeouts came in the ninth, two of which were upheld after ABS challenges by Brandon Valenzuela and Wilyer Abreu. Toronto provided early support with a five-run third inning against Sonny Gray, highlighted by an RBI single from Vladimir Guerrero Jr., a three-run homer by George Springer, and an RBI double by Ernie Clement; Nathan Lukes, Kazuma Okamoto, and Daulton Varsho also had run-scoring hits. The outing lowered Cease's ERA to 2.46, left him with a major-league-leading 167 strikeouts, and extended his pace toward a sixth consecutive season with more than 200 strikeouts. Entering the game the Red Sox had won 16 of 17, but the loss dropped Boston to 53-50, seven games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East while still holding a 2.5-game cushion for a wild-card spot. Umpires upheld a near-home-run foul call on a Connor Wong drive after a manager challenge, and Cease matched his season high of 12 strikeouts for the third time this year.
