Malaysia to host October F1 race, replacing Bahrain Grand Prix

Malaysia is set to host a Formula 1 race at the Sepang circuit near Kuala Lumpur on 2-4 October as a replacement for the Bahrain Grand Prix, BBC Sport reports. The Sepang track, last on the F1 calendar in 2017, will stage the event on behalf of Bahrain and the race will be presented as the Bahrain Grand Prix being held in Malaysia. Formula 1 has arranged the move but the race still needs formal sign-off, including from the FIA, and an official announcement is expected in the coming days, perhaps as early as Sunday. Bahrain and Saudi Arabia had their April races postponed in March after the United States and Israel launched a war against Iran, and F1 had hoped to reinstate Bahrain for October but faced logistical deadlines. If confirmed, the Sepang event would create three consecutive race weekends in Azerbaijan, Malaysia and Singapore. The ongoing conflict also puts the season-ending races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi in doubt; a decision on those is due in September with Imola, Portimao and Istanbul Park under consideration as alternatives. Canceling the four Middle Eastern races would reduce this season’s calendar from 24 races to 20, while F1 is aiming to host at least 21 races to avoid contractual rights-fee and sponsorship consequences.

Right, so, the Bahrain Grand Prix from Sakhir is a 6,035 km separation from the event to the place it's named for. That beats out the 2026 Dakar Rally, held 5,899 km from Dakar in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia for "largest separation this year". But it's less than the 7,135 km between Dakar and Lima in 2019.

It now looks likely we will have a Bahrain Grand Prix dated for early October at the Sepang Track in Malaysia . This will bring the amount of Grand Prix's to 21 if the final two cant take place due to the Gulf conflict. 21 is the minimum to make the GP calendar viable .
