In the second inning at Oracle Park, Michael O’Brien snared a foul ball hit by Wade Meckler off Logan Webb, an 82.1 mph liner, while perched in the second deck holding his toddler son. O’Brien made a slick, backhanded, bare-handed grab and kept his son out of harm’s way; he told MLB.com his instinct was to “shield him from the ball and make a play.” O’Brien said he has played baseball for 30 years and recalled a previous foul-ball catch behind home plate from Yasiel Puig in 2014, though that one was not backhanded. MLB highlighted the clip from Friday’s Angels vs. Giants game, which captured the protective, split-second play and O’Brien’s longtime connection to the game.
