Sara Duffey, 43, who posted online as Sara Gilson, was fatally shot along with her husband Jeremiah Shawn Duffey, 48, at their home in Collinsville, Oklahoma, in what police say was an apparent murder-suicide. Sara had sought a protective order on June 10 to keep Jeremiah away from their home, and another woman filed a protective order the same day alleging Jeremiah had kissed and fondled her daughter, sent inappropriate texts, invited her to a hotel room while traveling, and paid her to stay silent, according to court records. On July 11 Sara posted a video saying she was “preparing for when Netflix drops a documentary about my soon to be ex husband who I just found out is a pedophile,” a clip that investigators and the press say later circulated widely. Police received an emergency 911 call at about 11:15 PM twelve days after that post; neighbors reported screaming and a gunshot and a boy alerted a neighbor that his stepfather had shot his mother. Officers found both adults dead of gunshot wounds and said all indications were that Jeremiah killed Sara and then himself, though the investigation remains open. Sara’s son was placed in the custody of another parent, and an online fundraiser described Sara as a devoted mother; public-health data cited by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that more than half of female homicide victims in the United States are killed by current or former male intimate partners.
