The San Francisco Giants placed 27-year-old utilityman Casey Schmitt on the 10-day injured list with a torn meniscus in his left knee after he strained the knee rounding first base in the second inning of Monday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. Schmitt is expected to miss the rest of the season, ending what the article called a breakout campaign in which he had career highs with 21 home runs, nine stolen bases, 55 RBI and a .271 batting average. The club recalled infielder Osleivis Basabe from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move. Schmitt had drawn significant trade interest from contenders including the Seattle Mariners and Philadelphia Phillies, and his injury adds to a string of trade-chip setbacks such as Shea Langeliers, Spencer Steer and Jake Bauers that have thinned the market ahead of the Aug. 3 deadline. With Matt Chapman already on the injured list with an abdominal strain, the Giants' infield depth and their ability to deal from position-player surplus are both constrained, making it harder for teams like the Mariners to find right-handed bats on the market.
