Eddie Howe is set to leave his role as Newcastle United head coach after five years, telling the club he wants to take a break from football and expected to depart in the coming days. Howe, 48, led Newcastle to their first trophy in 70 years with the 2025 Carabao Cup and oversaw Champions League qualification in 2022-23, but last season ended with a 12th-place league finish and a heavy last-16 Champions League exit to Barcelona. The split is described as amicable, and Newcastle are reported to be well prepared for his exit with talks at an advanced stage. Matthias Jaissle, 38, Al Ahli head coach, is poised to replace Howe; Jaissle joined Al Ahli in 2023 and has led them to consecutive Asian Champions League titles in 2025 and 2026. Jaissle previously coached Red Bull Salzburg to back-to-back Austrian Bundesliga titles and the Austrian Cup, and spent his playing career with Hoffenheim. Both clubs share majority ownership by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, a connection that has eased Jaissle’s potential move. Newcastle have also been active in a disruptive transfer window, selling Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali and facing interest in Bruno Guimaraes, context that compounded pressure on last season’s results.
