Nirmal Purja confirmed dead in Broad Peak avalanche

Nirmal Purja, the British-Nepali mountaineer and Elite Exped co-founder, was confirmed dead after an avalanche struck an expedition on Pakistan’s Broad Peak. The avalanche caught 11 climbers on Thursday while Purja was leading a team of 10 other people between camps two and three on the west ridge; trackers suggest the slide happened close to 9am local time at about 6,579 metres. Elite Exped said Purja and other expedition members, including Nepali guides Pur Bahadur Gurung (Yukta) and Nima Sherpa, did not survive and asked for privacy for grieving families. Rescuers had found four bodies by Friday and recovery efforts continued amid harsh weather. The group included five Nepali climbers plus US, Pakistani, Omani and Chinese nationals and another foreign climber, officials said. Purja rose to international prominence after climbing all 14 of the world’s peaks over 8,000 metres in just over six months in 2019 and later led the first winter summit team on K2. Bear Grylls called the news heartbreaking; Elite Exped described the loss as profound and immense heartbreak and said more details would follow.
