Nirmal Purja confirmed dead in Broad Peak avalanche

Nirmal Purja has been confirmed dead after an avalanche struck an expedition on Pakistan’s Broad Peak, Elite Exped said. Purja was among 11 climbers caught when the avalanche hit around 9am local time near 6,579 metres between camps two and three on the mountain’s west ridge. Elite Exped said other expedition members also died, naming climbing partners and guides Pur Bahadur Gurung and Nima Sherpa among the victims. Rescuers had recovered four bodies by Friday, and trackers carried by the climbers showed a rapid loss of altitude consistent with an avalanche. Purja made history in 2019 by climbing all 14 peaks over 8,000 metres in just over six months and later led the first winter team to summit K2. A former Gurkha and UK special forces member, Purja served 16 years in the British military and received an MBE in 2018. Bear Grylls called the news heartbreaking for climbers who knew Purja.
