Tour de France Femmes Stage 1, Lorena Wiebes wins yellow

Lorena Wiebes powered to victory on Stage 1 of the Tour de France Femmes, winning an uphill sprint to take the first yellow jersey. Race finish lists Kim Le Court second and Demi Vollering third, with Puck Pieterse fourth and Noemi Rüegg fifth. The race kicked off in and around Lausanne on Swiss roads for the opening day. Organisers are running this edition while extreme heat and wildfires are already shaping elite cycling this summer; the UCI’s High Temperature Protocol (introduced in 2024) and Extreme Weather Protocol have been used to shorten and reroute stages and to change feed-zone rules. Climate scientists and sports physiologists including Dr Lindsey Hunt and Dr Chloe Brimicombe have argued the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature index underlying the heat protocol has limitations for cycling, noting factors such as wind speed and stage profile that affect rider risk. The Tour de France Femmes faces further route pressure this week because of wildfire threats around Mont Ventoux, a decision that could force additional changes to next Friday’s summit stage.
