Pirates acquire reliever Camilo Doval from Yankees

The New York Yankees on Saturday traded right-handed reliever Camilo Doval to the Pittsburgh Pirates for two minor-league prospects, catcher Omar Alfonzo, 22, and outfielder Luis Cruz, 18; the Yankees will cover some of Doval’s remaining 2026 salary. Doval, whom New York acquired from the San Francisco Giants at the 2025 trade deadline, struggled this season with a 4.54 ERA and the lowest strikeout percentage of his six-year career while remaining extreme splits, allowing a .999 OPS to left-handed hitters and a .478 OPS to right-handers. Yankees manager Aaron Boone had relegated Doval to mop-up duty; during the July 22 doubleheader against Pittsburgh Boone used starter Will Warren to finish a game, signaling diminished trust. Statcast and analytics measures show Doval’s sinker and cutter graded as the worst of his career on Stuff+ and he ranks in the bottom 10th percentile in average exit velocity and hard-hit percentage allowed. The Pirates are 55-56 and 2.5 games back of the third National League wild-card spot; their bullpen carries a 4.38 ERA, 23rd in MLB, prompting the club to add a veteran arm. Alfonzo, Pittsburgh’s No. 19 prospect per MLB Pipeline, has a .239/.338/.420 line and .758 OPS in 60 Double-A games this year and suffered family losses in June’s Venezuela earthquakes. Cruz has an .843 OPS in 50 at-bats with Pittsburgh’s Dominican summer-league affiliate.
