Kyle Chandler praises Lanterns premiere

In the final moments of Lanterns premiere, Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, is shown dead in the snowy stands of a rural high school football field after a 10-year time jump and his power ring is missing. Chandler told the Los Angeles Times that the surprising ending helped sell him on doing the series, saying, "That sets into the tone of the show." Chandler describes his version of Jordan as surly and self-centered, a former military test pilot turned space cop who resents training a backup. Aaron Pierre plays John Stewart, the new recruit Jordan has been assigned to train. Creators Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King framed Jordan as a Chuck Yeager type, and Mundy said Chandler's likability allows the character to be pushed into jerkier territory while still landing for audiences. Chandler referenced his past role as coach Eric Taylor on Friday Night Lights and noted he still appreciates receiving physical scripts. Mundy praised Chandler's technical acting skill and granular choices, calling him "very, very gifted on a granular level as an actor."

I just finished. The cinematography, script writing, and tone is what DC fans wanted from superman. I hope this path holds. It's more The Batman, than superman. And that's what I love

#Lanterns is off to an intriguing start. Each of the mysteries set up in this first episode have me hooked and eagerly waiting for the coming chapters. Kyle Chandler is absolutely killing it as a jaded Hal Jordan and is a blast to watch. Can't wait for the suits!

What a pilot. Smart to make it a detective show about the old cop breaking in the rookie. So much fun to see Kyle Chandler let his hair down. The great Kelly Macdonald bravely attempts a midwestern accent. Some superhero stuff but not too much, feels like DC's Andor? Maybe I'm being dramatic.

The best superhero stories are genre pieces at their heart. The power is a solution, but the problem can't be solved with the power. The pilot showed things that would make any of us uncomfortable, but stayed far away from the ring just "fixing" things. People over powers.

Now that I can finally talk about it… LANTERNS is excellent! An intense detective story with strong character building and tons of surprises. Feels very much like a TRUE DETECTIVE with superhero elements; Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre were clearly the perfect choices as well

Lanterns Episode 1 is a decent start. Right off the bat, John & Hal’s characterizations are spot on and Aaron Pierre & Kyle Chandler embody their personalities really well. Its placement on the DCU timeline also suggests something for the Lantern Corps I’m looking forward to seeing developed further

That first Lanterns episode was great. I really like how different it is from other superhero films and shows we've seen, and I'm enthralled by the characters. Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre make for a great team. It's another major DCU triumph. I cannot wait for what's to come next.
