Phyllida Law, the Scottish stage and screen actress and mother of Emma and Sophie Thompson, has died aged 94, her granddaughter Gaia Wise confirmed. Law died "supremely peacefully at home, surrounded by all her family," her personal manager Jacky Leggo said. Born in Glasgow in 1932, Law trained at Bristol Old Vic and moved from stage design to acting, joining Bristol Old Vic productions in the 1950s and later appearing at the National Theatre and in West End runs including A Day in the Death of Joe Egg and A Voyage Round My Father. Her screen career stretched from 1950s television such as Dr Finlay’s Casebook to high-profile later roles in Peter's Friends and Much Ado About Nothing, and she appeared with both daughters in the 1996 film Emma and in The Winter Guest, Alan Rickman’s directing debut. Law continued to work on television in shows including Waking the Dead, Foyle’s War, Doc Martin and Kingdom; her final screen role was the 2020 film Then Came You. She married actor Eric Thompson in 1957; she is survived by her daughters Emma and Sophie Thompson.
