Coco Gauff reaches US Open quarterfinals, beats Iva Jović 6-1, 6-4

Coco Gauff defeated 18-year-old Iva Jović 6-1, 6-4 on Monday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium to reach the US Open quarterfinals. Gauff dominated early, then withstood a midsecond-set surge from Jović, finishing the match in 93 minutes with 65 points to Jović’s 44. Jović entered the match 48 hours after a three-set win over Alexandra Eala and pushed Gauff late; Gauff was 0-30 while trying to serve out the match before forcing errors and converting on a match point after an overhead caromed off the top of the net. Afterward Gauff hugged Jović and called her an “incredible player and incredible talent” in the on-court interview. The victory sends Gauff into her third Grand Slam quarterfinal in four majors this year and sets up a last-eight meeting with Mirra Andreeva. Gauff said she has spent the past year rebuilding two key shots with the goal of winning a third Grand Slam title, and this win was described in the match report as another step toward that objective.

This is probably the best Coco has ever played. She's gonna be tough to take out. Of course Iva wasn't ready for this type of matchup. I know Mirra hasn't played well against Coco before but I expect a much better performance from her this time

Coco Gauff is the sixth American into the #USOpen singles QFs so far, beating Jovic in relatively smooth straights. Three women (Gauff, Pegula, Navarro) and three men (Michelsen, Tiafoe, Shelton) with a chance of a fourth man (Tien) to join them. A bumper crop year, golly.
