George Osborne urges UK to rejoin EU customs union

financeSep 13, 202634382

Former chancellor George Osborne told the Independent that Britain’s economy has “fallen off a cliff” since Brexit and urged the UK to rejoin the European Union’s customs union as the fastest route to revive trade and investment. Osborne said “Brexit has been a mess” and argued rejoining the customs union would be “a quite simple thing to do,” noting it was not part of the referendum debate and that leaving it has had “a devastating impact on trade.” He dismissed the promised big US trade deals as now “pretty fanciful” and said closer ties with the continent could help address Britain’s growth problem. Acknowledging it will be difficult a decade on from the referendum, Osborne contrasted the customs union with the single market by saying rejoining would not require accepting free movement of people. He also suggested political leaders such as Andy Burnham should consider rejoining to rebuild links with the EU.

George Osborne wants the Customs Union but not the Single Market. I'm so sick of this stupid idea. The Customs Union means a joint seat at the WTO. That's useless unless you have cross border manufacture with the free movement of goods, services, capital and workers facilitated by the Single Market.
