The New York Giants acquired quarterback J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round pick, a deal the teams say is pending McCarthy passing a physical. McCarthy, 23, was the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft and started 10 games last season, completing 57.6 percent of his passes for 1,632 yards with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while adding 181 rushing yards and four rushing scores. The Vikings moved on after McCarthy lost the starting job to Kyler Murray, fell to third on the depth chart behind Carson Wentz, and missed 24 of 34 possible games across his first two seasons, including a high ankle sprain that cost him five games last year. McCarthy made his NFL debut in Week 1 last season, throwing two touchdown passes and rushing for a score in a 27-24 win over the Chicago Bears, then returned from injury in Week 9 against the Detroit Lions. The Giants made the move after starter Jaxson Dart suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 2; veteran Jameis Winston has started in Dart’s place, including a 12-7 win over the Tennessee Titans in which he completed 14 of 22 passes for 118 yards. New York passed on McCarthy in the 2024 draft when it selected wide receiver Malik Nabers with the sixth overall pick. The trade gives the Giants another young quarterback on a rookie deal while Minnesota gains a future draft asset, pending the physical outcome.

Kyler Murray has looked pretty awful for the Vikings, but McCarthy is so bad that they gave him away for a 5th round pick rather than keep him around as insurance. That's a precipitous fall for the former 10th overall pick.

QB’s are a crapshoot. My 49ers had the same problem years ago. 3rd pick overall was for Trey Lance who’s been bouncing around trying to make it for years now. I think drafting these young QB underclassmen is the biggest gamble.
