Manchester City to appeal guilty Premier League verdict, faces potential £800m bill

An independent Premier League commission found Manchester City guilty of 114 of 115 financial misconduct charges, concluding the club used “sham” commercial contracts and secret funding from its Abu Dhabi owners to inflate revenues and reduce costs by more than 900 million pounds. The commission said schemes enabled City to appear to comply with league rules; possible sanctions range from a fine to expulsion from the Premier League. Manchester City denies wrongdoing and is expected to lodge an appeal by Friday. The leaks that underpinned the case came from Football Leaks founder Rui Pinto, who obtained private documents showing breaches from 2009 to 2018. Pinto, 37, a Portuguese hacker and activist from Vila Nova de Gaia, has been a protected witness since August 2020 but will no longer be granted witness protection following the verdict. Pinto was arrested in Budapest in January 2019, extradited to Portugal in March 2019, given a four-year suspended sentence in September 2023 for illegally obtaining documents and related offences, and was acquitted on 241 separate counts in April 2026 after a court ruled those charges invalid. The Premier League’s findings have already prompted calls for UK authorities to investigate potential tax implications and related matters.
