Red Wings place Dylan Larkin on IR amid trade drama; fans boo at opener

The Detroit Red Wings placed center Dylan Larkin on injured reserve retroactive to August 15 and activated defenseman Andreas Englund from the immigration non-roster list ahead of the 2026-27 opener. Head coach Todd McLellan told The Athletic’s Max Bultman Larkin would miss the first two regular-season games, and because the IR move is retroactive the team can activate him at any time. Detroit now lists 13 forwards and eight defensemen, meaning Larkin’s activation would likely force a defenseman demotion to open a roster spot. Englund, a 30-year-old Swede claimed off waivers from the Calgary Flames last week, finished 2025-26 with three goals and 13 points in 52 AHL games for the Milwaukee Admirals and went scoreless in three NHL games with Nashville; he had signed a one-year $900,000 deal with Calgary this summer. Attendee posts from the season opener say fans booed Larkin during pregame introductions, with some reports of chants including “Sell The Team.”
