Max Verstappen won the rain-hit Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang, taking his and Red Bull's first victory of the year after a dominant drive in a race delayed by one hour and 33 minutes. Heavy rain and then a string of technical problems during wet formation laps forced the long delay and left the FIA deciding starting order. Mercedes's Kimi Antonelli finished second, gaining a massive championship advantage when team-mate George Russell retired with a power unit failure five laps from the end; Antonelli now leads Russell by 84 points with six or seven races remaining. Lewis Hamilton recovered from an early tyre-choice error on slicks at the wet start to pass Red Bull's Isack Hadjar for third with three laps to go. Verstappen repassed Russell on lap six, pitted for slicks under a safety car after Valtteri Bottas spun on lap nine, and passed Antonelli at Turn Four when the race resumed four laps later. A late safety car for Alex Albon produced a four-lap dash to the flag, but Verstappen remained unchallenged; Russell stopped before Turn One with five laps to go, and Lando Norris briefly ran through gravel avoiding Russell's stranded car. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso finished immediately ahead of Norris to score points for the team for only their third time this season.
