Mallory McMorrow suspends Senate campaign, Michigan primary now El-Sayed vs Haley Stevens

Michigan state Sen. Mallory McMorrow suspended her U.S. Senate campaign, leaving former Wayne County health director Abdul El-Sayed and U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens as the two remaining Democratic contenders for the August 4 primary. McMorrow’s March attack over El-Sayed’s plans to hold a rally with pro-Palestinian streamer Hasan Piker ignited a fierce intra-party fight; El-Sayed rejected calls to cancel the event and the controversy substantially raised his profile. Campaign tracking shows El-Sayed recorded a string of nine strong polls, led in six of eight polls since the controversy and the last five, and a post-controversy survey showed a 13-point jump in his name recognition. El-Sayed also posted a record fundraising haul during the dispute, reported an influx of volunteers, and received several major mainstream endorsements. McMorrow, who had been near the lead in earlier polling, fell back significantly before suspending her campaign. In a statement after McMorrow’s exit, El-Sayed said, "I welcome your supporters to our movement to stand up against money in politics, to put money back in pockets, and pass Medicare for All." The primary now pits El-Sayed’s insurgent, progressive economic message against Stevens’s more moderate, establishment-aligned candidacy.

I am a huge Mallory McMorrow fan - and her decision to suspend her campaign is a testament to her character and commitment to the public interest. Abdul El-Sayed for Michigan! www.nytimes.com/2026/07/05/u...

Notable — Haley Stevens makes no outreach to Mallory McMorrow supporters, while Abdul El-Sayed explicitly welcomes them to his movement:

Haley Stevens on Mallory McMorrow suspending her campaign

“Anyone who raises their hand to serve the people of Michigan and puts forward thoughtful ideas for how they would lead earns my respect. Mallory McMorrow has been an important voice, both in this race and in the State Senate, for policies that benefit Michigan’s children and families, and I look forward to working with her in the future to build a stronger Michigan for everyone.”

“As we enter the final month of the primary election, I'm excited to continue to make my case to Michiganders why I'm the strongest Democrat to defeat Mike Rogers this November, lower costs, protect manufacturing jobs, and stand up to Trump's abuses of power.”

!! Mallory McMorrow drops out of the Michigan Senate primary, leaving a one-on-one contest between Abdul El-Sayed and Haley Stevens. This dramatically changes the dynamic of the race. A must-win seat for Democrats this fall.
