Kylian Mbappé scored twice in France’s 6-4 third-place loss to England in Miami, taking his career World Cup total to 22 and surpassing Lionel Messi as the tournament’s all-time top scorer. His two goals were his 21st and 22nd overall and brought his tally at this World Cup to 10, putting him in the lead for the Golden Boot. Michael Olise assisted both Mbappé goals, his seventh assist of the tournament, breaking Pelé’s single-tournament assist record from 1970. England raced to a 4-0 half-time lead, Bukayo Saka completed a late hat-trick and Jude Bellingham scored England’s sixth, giving England their best World Cup finish since 1966. France manager Didier Deschamps called the first half “disgraceful” but praised his squad’s fight and confirmed this World Cup would be his last as head coach. With two goals and an assist in the tournament, Mbappé also set a record for most goal involvements at a single World Cup since 1966, registering 14 total goal involvements.
