Black Mirror directors reject HBO 'Harry Potter' over J.K. Rowling's views

tvAug 14, 2026289,078

Directors Ally Pankiw and Kate Herron said they turned down HBO’s forthcoming Harry Potter TV series because of J.K. Rowling’s views on transgender people. Pankiw wrote on Instagram “Absolutely f***ing not” when asked about directing the show, and Herron commented that she declined directing opportunities for the series twice. Major outlets including Variety and Deadline published their statements and reported the refusals. The directors framed the decisions as refusing to participate in work that would fund Rowling, and their posts drew public praise and calls to boycott the HBO project in linked coverage and commentary.

And it is THIS EASY. I have more sympathy for, like, film crews and ground level production staff because that is not a job where you get to pick and choose what you're working on 99% of the time. But actors, directors, writers, producers? They choose. And they could have so easily said "hell no"

The crazy thing is television writers aren't NEARLY as rich and famous as some of the actors they're bringing in. I imagine the industry is a pain in the ass. And yet, THEY still stuck to their fucking morals and told Joanne to fuck off TWICE. There's no fuckin' excuse at this point.

yay! look everybody, look and understand how hard this isn't!

It’s so funny to think about how so many of the folks attached probably weren’t even the studio’s first choice—they were just the first people who were willing to sell out. Like, not only did you choose money over allyship/your spine, you’re also just kinda embarrassing.

Loki was pretty big for a lot of the trans women I know so I hope Herron knows what a crossroads she went the right direction on

Seems really easy to say "no" to this transphobic witch

Good news for me since Kate Herron is apparently set to director a movie based on The Sims and that sounds like it'll be hilarious so yay her

Matéria importante, mas um obs: A Variety colocando "Rowling’s views on trans persons’ rights, which many have alleged are transphobic". Ué, mas ela já deixou bem claro que ela é transfóbica, inclusive financia movimentos.

Love Kate Herron’s work on Loki and Doctor Who. Considering how pro queer her work on both shows was, it’s not shocking she rejected Harry Potter.

Ally Pankiw (I Used to Be Funny) revealed in an Instagram post that she passed on directing the HBO Harry Potter series. Kate Herron (Loki) revealed in the comments that she passed on directing episodes TWICE. It really is that fucking easy. It's really just that easy.

Text messages:

"I have an instinct on the answer but I feel compelled to ask."

"Harry Potter? Hard no?"

"Absolutely fucking not!" Lol"

"But thank you got asking."

"Of course :)"

"I assumed as much"

crazy how easy it is to say "wait, the transphobia show? by the hitlerite castledweller? lmao no" so many act like if they can't work for that bitch they'll die and explode and get fucked by multiple corpse-hungry dogs

Also, I’m glad they’re struggling to get directors. In this economy, too? It’s brutal out there and we keep hearing about BAFTA winners ditching their careers to make ends meet driving an Uber. Yet here are these two telling HBO to go fuck themselves.

Is named Ally. is an ally to trans people.

Apparently Kate Herron is developing a movie based on The Sims. I previously had no interest in a Sims movie, but I am more than happy to go watch it simply to show my support to anyone telling Moldy Joanne to fuck off.

Not only is this a profile in courage but also a (rightfully) vicious subtweet of Nicholas Hoult by Ally Pankiw

this reminds me of when people in academia said you "can't" turn down a potentially lucrative research meeting with epstein. all the while actually your colleagues can and do turn these things down! bsky.app/profile/doct...

Just need to share comedian Patti Harrison’s (who is trans) hilarious comment on this post.

I'm here thinking "wait... She said no and they *still* came back to ask a second time? Goddamn."

Mike Dawson17

I wish it were possible to not-watch this show enough to un-Billionaire JK Rowling, but I doubt that it is. I *do* think it might be possible to make it enough of a commercial disappointment that it embarrasses her and everyone involved however

Stuart Webb16

I remember Mackenzie Crook saying on RHLSTP that people are always surprised he turned down a return to the Pirates films a couple of times because they assume it's "can't say no" money. But only the Johnny Depps get that, and in fact it's really easy to say "no" if you really don't want to do it.
