On Boardroom Talks with Taylor Rooks Nneka Ogwumike announced she will retire from the WNBA at the conclusion of the 2026 season after 15 seasons. Speaking on the ten year anniversary of the 2016 championship she reflected on teammates and leadership, saying “I think we’re never really satisfied with how we exist in this world as women, as Black women, as women in sport.” Ogwumike said she never expected to still be playing after Stanford redirected her from a path toward medical school into pro basketball and that “I am that player that I never thought that I would be.” She is averaging 16.8 points and 8.8 rebounds per game this season while shooting near 51 percent from the field. Ogwumike framed the decision as one made from strength rather than decline, admitting with a laugh “it’s a little bit my body” but saying she has reached a sense of fullness and wants to step away on her own terms.
