The Philadelphia Eagles are signing three-time Pro Bowl tight end Zach Ertz to their practice squad after Dallas Goedert suffered a knee injury in the Eagles’ win over the Tennessee Titans. Goedert is expected to miss a few weeks and with Grant Calcaterra and rookie Eli Stowers on injured reserve the Eagles had only blocking specialist Johnny Mundt and deep reserve E.J. Jenkins at tight end. Ertz returns nearly five years after Philadelphia traded him to the Cardinals; he spent the last two seasons with Washington and entered the offseason as a free agent while rehabbing a torn ACL suffered in Week 14 last season. Ertz ranks fifth among tight ends with 825 career receptions and his 579 catches as an Eagle sit 10 behind Harold Carmichael’s franchise record of 589. The team kept four tight ends on the initial 53-man roster but depth concerns pushed general manager Howie Roseman to resume conversations with Ertz; Roseman previously praised Ertz as one of the greatest tight ends to play the game. The signing gives the Eagles an experienced receiving option behind Jalen Hurts and stabilizes the depth chart while Goedert recovers for the coming weeks.
