Former Rep. David Rivera sentenced to 10 years for secret Venezuela lobbying

Former Florida Republican congressman David Rivera was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for running a secret $50 million lobbying campaign on behalf of the Venezuelan government during the first Trump administration. Jurors found Rivera guilty in May on counts including failing to register as a foreign agent and conspiracy to commit money laundering, and a judge called the case "a classic money laundering case" while rejecting a motion to lower the federal guidelines range. Prosecutors say Rivera concealed the $50 million contract and received a windfall that he did not report for taxes. Rivera has been jailed since his conviction, his attorneys say they will appeal, and they applied for a presidential pardon in June. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, described in coverage as a longtime friend, testified that he had no knowledge of Rivera’s activities. The sentence follows reporting and charges from multiple federal outlets and signals prosecutors’ willingness to pursue unregistered foreign influence operations involving former U.S. officials.
